Red Roses

18x24
Watercolor and black ink

This one is another of my experimental watercolors in which I was trying to get the feeling of color and lushness of the roses by using a different interpretive style. They look like they are jumping out of the vase which jitters from the exertion of trying to contain them. I was intrigued by the red of the roses and the red of the wall flowing together. The big loopy lines make it a very happy painting.

Rufous Towhee

Pastel

When I use birds as subjects for my painting classes, I often start the students in black and white until they understand what we call "value" or "shades and tints." It is the first step to achieving good color. This little bird is shy and hides on the ground in the undergrowth. With a black head and back, it has beautiful little orange-red patches under its wings and a creamy tummy.

Wild Flowers

10x14
Watercolor and gouache

This painting is done in wet-in-wet style watercolor. I worked into the painting while the surface was still watery. I work fast in this style and the paint has a mind of its own. It is a very free form technique, lots of fun. I then drew white marks over the surface when it was nearly dry to create quite a different and random type of bouquet.

Santa Fe Church in Snow

8x11
Watercolor

Watercolor is a beautiful medium for capturing light. The other thing it can do is "save" light, as in this case, where I left the white of the paper to act like snow.

Party Bouquet

18x24
Watercolor

Party Bouquet by Char Fitzpatrick

Another experimental painting in which I was trying to capture the vivaciousness of dahlias. I crazily threw in the color and then applied zig-zaggy outlines to express the gaiety and movement of the hues. I was particularly entranced by stems in the water through the transparency of the vase.
