Watercolor and gouache

The Pond by Char Fitzpatrick

This is another piece from the series I created for my niece’s wedding. She was married in a lovely place called Bridal Veil in the Columbia River Gorge. I could not pass up the mesmerising serenity of this pond at her wedding site.

Dark Dahlias

24" x 18"
Watercolor

This is another in a series of interpretive floral paintings. The dahlias intense colors are offset by jagged lines and the spotty background suggests a wall behind the table. I like to work with transparent vases and how they distort stems.

Clouds Over Ireland

11" x 13"
Watercolor

Clouds Over Ireland by Char Fitzpatrick

The clouds in Ireland are stunning. They billow by casting hurried shadows over the land. While I sat on a stone to paint this, a flock of sheep pell-melled down either side of me, the sheepdog fast in chase. When I turned around to look, the farmer sat quietly upon his horse on the road above me.

Wood Duck

Watercolor and gouache

Wood ducks are shy birds. The males  have phenomenal coloration. The first time I saw one, I was so surprised I stalked it around the local Rhododendron Gardens in Portland trying to take photos of it.

Barges on the Rhein

11" x 13"
Oil on board

Barges on the Rhein by Char Fitzpatrick

At one time I lived close to the Rhein river in Germany. It is a fascinating, bustling river, with loads of water traffic from other countries passing through. One year it flooded dramatically, and though I worked from a photograph I took, I attempted to paint it in a loose manner in the studio, as if I were sitting on the bank capturing the mood live.

Jan's Bouquet

20" x 16”
Oil on canvas

My sister grows a marvelous garden every summer. She loves all kinds of flowers and has a gift for arranging them. I passed this bouquet in her entryway and was mesmerized by the color control and the textural variety of flowers. I often see a "trick of the eye" when I paint, in this case a spatial puzzlement where the shadow of the vase meets the gray of the wall, which should appear to be behind it. I like to tweak those things if I see them.

Pie on a Pedestal

One of the things that most entranced me about painting this pie was the look of the reflections in the pie plate. The silver server was gratifying to render, its color was rather elusive.

Two Jays

10” X 8"
Watercolor and gouache

Two Jays by Char Fitzpatrick

My niece requested a group of watercolors for her wedding invitations focusing around nature and bird life. Though I simply liked the color of this (I assumed) female and male jay, I later realized, I had unconsciously found their sparring cockiness very amusing for wedding invitations!

Storm Over Ayrshire

11"x 13"
watercolor, gouache highlights

Storm Over Ayrshire by Char Fitzpatrick

The weather changed very quickly while I did the first watercolor of this scene. I was frozen to the bone, but determined to capture the brooding mood as the clouds swept over like black locomotives in this, the second painting.
