Bouquet in Yellow Room

14x17
Oil crayon

Char Fitzpatrick on Paintbox from Portland

This was another experimental bouquet in which I was getting the feel of oil crayons, while maintaining a scratchy drawing feeling.

Red Roses

18x24
Watercolor and black ink

Char Fitzpatrick's Red Roses on Paintbox from Portland
©2014 Char Fitzpatrick

This one is another of my experimental watercolors in which I was trying to get the feeling of color and lushness of the roses by using a different interpretive style. They look like they are jumping out of the vase which jitters from the exertion of trying to contain them. I was intrigued by the red of the roses and the red of the wall flowing together. The big loopy lines make it a very happy painting.

Rufous Towhee

6x9
Pastel

Rufous Towhee by Char Fitzpatrick
©2014 Char Fitzpatrick

When I use birds as subjects for my painting classes, I often start the students in black and white until they understand what we call "value" or "shades and tints." It is the first step to achieving good color. This little bird is shy and hides on the ground in the undergrowth. With a black head and back, it has beautiful little orange-red patches under its wings and a creamy tummy.

Wild Flowers

10x14
Watercolor and gouache

Wild Flowers by Char Fitzpatrick
©2014 Char Fitzpatrick

This painting is done in wet-in-wet style watercolor. I worked into the painting while the surface was still watery. I work fast in this style and the paint has a mind of its own. It is a very free form technique, lots of fun. I then drew white marks over the surface when it was nearly dry to create quite a different and random type of bouquet.

Santa Fe Church in Snow

8x11
Watercolor

Santa Fe Church in Snow by Char Fitzpatrick

Watercolor is a beautiful medium for capturing light. The other thing it can do is "save" light, as in this case, where I left the white of the paper to act like snow.

Party Bouquet

18x24
Watercolor

Party Bouquet by Char Fitzpatrick
©2014 Char Fitzpatrick

Another experimental painting in which I was trying to capture the vivaciousness of dahlias. I crazily threw in the color and then applied zig-zaggy outlines to express the gaiety and movement of the hues. I was particularly entranced by stems in the water through the transparency of the vase.

Mt. Hood

11x15
Watercolor and pastel

Mt. Hood by Char Fitzpatrick

I sometimes mix mediums. Watercolor and pastels seem to get along very well. I let the subject matter tell me how much to use one thing or another. Pastels can give a real punch to a soft watercolor.

Hidden Beauty

8x10
Watercolor and gouache

©2014 Char Fitzpatrick

I like visual things that are not obvious, that you need to stop and observe. I delight in the way wildlife sits quietly hidden. I relished helping the viewer to see this demure female in her enchanting coppice.

Cubist Bouquet

14x11
Watercolor and gouache

Cubist Bouquet by Char Fitzpatrick
©2014 Char Fitzpatrick

Sometimes in attempting to paint a subject, it just goes wrong no matter how hard I try. In this case, I over painted these flowers about 3 times until they became murky and lifeless. I used one of my favorite last-ditch techniques and put it under the shower head in the bath tub. Most of the image washed off leaving a lovely soft painting. I then enhanced it with opaque gouache, heavily describing the background and the table, but leaving the delicacy of the flowers. It seemed to want to be a cubist painting, with small lines and angles that offset the fuzzy flowers.

Kids' Flowers

15x18
Watercolor and pastel

Kids' Flowers by Char Fitzpatrick

This watercolor was inspired by a children's art show next door to the class I teach in a local city art venue. Children paint with such joy and abandon that it is infectious. I felt like trying it out and encouraged my adult learners to just cut loose.

Zigzag Geranium

15x13
Watercolor and gouache

Zigzag Geranium by Char Fitzpatrick
©2014 Char Fitzpatrick

Gouache is an opaque substance with the consistency of toothpaste. It is water-based and acts like a very high grade poster paint. In this painting I struggled mightily to get the feel of the geraniums, one of my favorite flowers, and failed. Out of desperation I blocked out most of the under image until only the glowing pot and geranium head were visible. It has a magnetically mysterious effect I never planned on.

Ana Hummingbird, Male

Watercolor and gouache

Ana Hummingbird, Male by Char Fitzpatrick

The colors of the male ana hummingbird were very elusive to paint. The feathers had a luminescence that seems to flicker in the light. It was tough to catch their color without becoming garish.

Crazy Collage

9x14
Found paper and gouache

Crazy Collage by Char Fitzpatrick
©2014 Char Fitzpatrick

I like to veer off into collage when I feel exploratory, instead of painting exactly what I see. This collage was a culmination of many studies of flowers done in a classroom setting with students. I decided to throw in a session on collage because it, too, is a type of painting. We had been looking at a children's art show on the premises which inspired my students to enjoy a sense of abandon when they undertook their collages.

Dark Dahlias

24" x 18"
Watercolor

Dark Dahlias by Char Fitzpatrick

This is another in a series of interpretive floral paintings. The dahlias intense colors are offset by jagged lines and the spotty background suggests a wall behind the table. I like to work with transparent vases and how they distort stems.

Clouds Over Ireland

11" x 13"
Watercolor

Clouds Over Ireland by Char Fitzpatrick
©2014 Char Fitzpatrick

The clouds in Ireland are stunning. They billow by casting hurried shadows over the land. While I sat on a stone to paint this, a flock of sheep pell-melled down either side of me, the sheepdog fast in chase. When I turned around to look, the farmer sat quietly upon his horse on the road above me.

Barges on the Rhein

Oil on board

Barges on the Rhein by Char Fitzpatrick

At one time I lived close to the Rhein river in Germany. It is a fascinating, bustling river, with loads of water traffic from other countries passing through. One year it flooded dramatically, and though I worked from a photograph I took, I attempted to paint it in a loose manner in the studio, as if I were sitting on the bank capturing the mood live.

Jan's Bouquet

20" x 16”
Oil on canvas

Jan's Bouquet by Char Fitzpatrick

My sister grows a marvelous garden every summer. She loves all kinds of flowers and has a gift for arranging them. I passed this bouquet in her entryway and was mesmerized by the color control and the textural variety of flowers. I often see a "trick of the eye" when I paint, in this case a spatial puzzlement where the shadow of the vase meets the gray of the wall, which should appear to be behind it. I like to tweak those things if I see them.

A Little About Me

My name is Char Fitzpatrick and I am an artist by trade. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and have loved to draw and paint since I was a little kid. Later in the 1970’s, pumped and primed from high school art classes and being naturally adventurous, I took myself to art school in Scotland. The years I spent there, elbow to elbow with my Scottish classmates in the studio every day, or painting in the countryside, teething on the remarkable work of the Scottish colorist painters (yes, GREAT colorists) have indelibly defined me as the painter I am today.

Now I find myself revisiting those roots. And when I smear on the clouds of a spring sky or streak vermillion across a hillside with my fingertips, I still feel the same old thrill.

I hope you enjoy my blog as I share works from my past and present. If you like what you see, check out my Etsy store.

Thanks!
